After a long wait, including a canceled game due to weather, the Lafayette Christian baseball team got to host their home opener and it was a doozy as the Cougars beat CrossPointe 14-9 in a wild game.
After a scoreless stalemate through the first 1.5 innings, the Cougars broke the game open with five runs in the bottom of the second.
Landon Childree was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to get the Cougars on the board. Logan Childree would double the lead with a one-run single. Cody Batistini would bring home the final three runs of the inning with a triple.
The Cougars would add a run to their lead in the third inning, taking a 6-0 lead when Dustin Ogle hit a one-run single.
CrossPointe refused to go away and scored a whopping nine runs in the fourth inning to take the lead.
Lafayette Christian’s offense kept plugging away and the Cougars quickly regained their lead with seven runs in the bottom of the fourth. A batter hit by a pitch, a walk and an error with the bases loaded allowed three straight runs to score. Ogle and Logan would each get a one-run single in the inning with a wild pitch in between allowing the other run to score in the inning.
The Cougars tacked on another run in the fifth inning when JP Karvelas grounded into a fielder’s choice, making it 14-9.
Lafayette Christian added two additional runs in the sixth inning.
Ogle and Logan led the Cougar offense with two hits apiece while Landon, David Karvelas and Dalton Colquett all had one apiece.
Josiah Hughes got the start on the mound for the Cougars and pitched a no-hitter with six strikeouts in his three innings of work. Karvelas and Ogle each saw time on the mound in relief of Hughes.
Lafayette Christian moved to 4-0 on the season. The Cougars will return to action next Tuesday on the road to Manchester High School.
