The LaGrange baseball team pulled off a late-inning rally on Thursday to beat Upson-Lee 6-4 in the team’s region opener.

With the Grangers trailing 4-3 heading to the bottom of the sixth inning, they needed a rally. It would be Junior Mason Calhoun who delivered in the clutch as his two-run double proved to be decisive putting the home team up 5-4. Brandon Bennett would hit a sacrifice fly to give the Grangers an insurance run heading to the seventh and final inning.

LaGrange would draw first blood in the game with Bennett hitting a one-run single to break the deadlock in the bottom of the first.

The Knights would flip the script in the top of the third inning with four runs to take the lead.

LaGrange finally answered the bell in the bottom of the fifth inning when a Cooper Stephens two-run single brought the Grangers within a run.

Gryson Cockrell had a superb day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with three runs scored. Grady Westmorland continues to be a hit machine and finished Thursday with two more hits to his name. Jackson Bozeman, Stephens, Calhoun, Kayden Sutton and Bennett all had a hit apiece.

Sutton pitched the opening three innings in which he allowed six hits and two earned runs. He was replaced by Westmorland, who earned the win by pitching the final four innings, allowing just four hits on seven strikeouts.

LaGrange now sits at 7-5 overall and 1-0 in the region. The Grangers will have to turn around and play the Knights on the road on Friday in a rematch of Thursday night’s game.
