LaGrange tops Upson-Lee to stay undefeated in region play

The LaGrange baseball team earned the season sweep over Upson-Lee on Friday with an 8-1 victory.
The Grangers opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Gryson Cockrell got the offense rolling with a one-run single. Brandon Bennett drove home the second and reached base safely on a fielder’s choice.
Upson-Lee would strike back with a run in the bottom of the second to cut the LaGrange lead in half.
The Grangers retook a two-run lead courtesy of a Mason Calhoun RBI double in the top of the third inning.
LaGrange continued to add to its lead with three runs in the fourth inning. Laken Tippy got an RBI ground out to get the scoring started. Rob Skinner hit a double to drive home the following two runs to make it 6-1 LaGrange.
The Grangers continued to add to their lead with two runs in the top of the seventh courtesy of a fielder’s choice and an RBI single from Kayden Sutton.
Caden Wood got the start on the mound for the Grangers and was superb in his four innings of work, striking out five batters while allowing just three hits and an earned run. Sinjon Lash replaced Wood on the mound and pitched two innings in which he allowed no hits. Caleb Allen pitched the final inning and slammed the door on the Knights.
Cockrell, Skinner and Grady Westmoreland led the team with two hits each. Calhoun, Sutton and Jackson Bozeman finished with a hit apiece.
LaGrange won its fourth game in a row to improve to 8-5 on the season 2-0 in region play. The Grangers will be back at The Branch next Tuesday against Whitewater in another important region clash.
