The Callaway baseball team rallied to overcome an early deficit and top Pike County 7-4 in the team’s region opener on Tuesday.

The Cavaliers had to dig deep after watching the Pirates score four runs in the top of the first inning.

Callaway dug in and chipped away at the deficit. The Cavaliers would get on the board with a run in the bottom of the second courtesy of an RBI groundout by Jeremiah Staples.

That would be just the momentum shifter the Cavaliers needed. Callaway would go on to tie the game up with three runs in the bottom of the third inning.

Slade Hunt brought the first run home with a bunt. Brody Swanson would hit a sacrifice fly to drive home the second. Lashun Gate would lay down a sacrifice bunt that tied the game up at four runs apiece.

Callaway would take the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Jaxon Duncan hit a two-run single that proved to be decisive. Wesley Williams scored later in the inning on a passed ball to give the Cavaliers another insurance run.

Duncan and Cass Fuller led the way with two hits apiece for the Cavaliers. Luke Taylor, Hunt and Swanson all had a hit each.

Blake Harrington got the start on the mound for the Cavaliers and pitched five innings before making way for Hunt, who pitched the final two innings and slammed the door on the Pike County offense.

Callaway has won five games in a row to improve to 6-4 overall and 1-0 in region play. The Cavaliers will be back in action on Friday in a rematch against the Pirates on the road.
