Troup County sheriff’s investigators are still working to identify a man accused of shooting and injuring another motorist in a road rage incident on the interstate.

Early Sunday morning, around 6:30 a.m., Troup County sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of an individual who had possibly been shot in a vehicle on the interstate.

Deputies located the vehicle on Interstate 85 Southbound near mile marker 21 and found a 56-year-old man bleeding from the eye from what was initially believed to be a gunshot wound.

The victim’s injuries were later determined to be non-life threatening and he was transported to a Columbus area hospital for surgery to his eye. Investigators are uncertain if the bullet struck the victim or if the injuries were caused by glass or other shrapnel from the gunshot.

After speaking with the victim, investigators learned that the assault was the result of a road rage incident. The victim advised that an unknown male driving a silver vehicle, possibly a Hyundai or KIA SUV, cut the victim off in traffic several times. The suspect then fired several shots at the victim’s car, causing injuries to his head near his eye.

The unidentified suspect then continued traveling south on Interstate 185.

TCSO says the shooting appears to be an isolated incident between the suspect and the victim.

As of Monday afternoon, investigators have not been able to identify the suspect or the vehicle.

TCSO Lt. Stewart Smith advised that investigators are still working to identify the suspect vehicle. Tag reading cameras are on the interstate but they are limited, he said.

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to contact the TCSO Criminal Investigations Division at (706) 883-1616. Anonymous tips can also be provided to the Troup County Crime Stoppers at (706) 812-1000.
