The Troup baseball team made it three wins in a row with an extra-inning victory over Mary Persons on Friday. The Tigers had to work for it, but came away with a clutch 6-3 win.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Tigers would draw first blood in the top of the second courtesy of an error from the Bulldog defense.
Troup would double its lead in the top of the third when Ethan Goff scored on a passed ball.
The 2-0 lead would be short lived with Mary Persons tying the game up with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning.
The game would stay locked at 2-2 until Troup scored what they hoped to be the winning run in the top of the sixth when Brady Willis hit a sacrifice fly that allowed Davis Moncus to reach home. It was not to be, as the Bulldogs answered right back with a run in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game.
The game would go to extra innings with the Tigers scoring three runs in the top of the eighth to win the game. Willis would play the hero as his single broke the deadlock and drove home two runs to give Troup a 5-3 lead. The Tigers would add an insurance run courtesy of a Jake Perry sacrifice fly.
Willis and Moncus led the Tigers with two hits apiece. Garrison Edwards, Cason Spears, Fisher Baltzell and Chase Mosley all had a hit each.
Moncus started on the mound for Troup and dominated in his three innings, allowing just two hits on two strikeouts. Carson Walker would also see time on the mound in relief of Moncus. Spears would close out the game in style, pitched in the final 3 ⅓ innings including three straight outs in the bottom of the eight inning to clinch the victory.
Troup improved to 9-6 overall and 4-1 in region play. The Tigers will be back on the diamond next Tuesday in a rematch against Mary Persons at home.
