The Callaway baseball team outlasted Handley 7-4 on Monday for a home win.

The Cavaliers hit Habdley with an opening barrage of six runs in the first inning.

Jacob Duncan scored on a passed ball for the first run of the game and Callaway was off to the races from there. Brody Swanson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 2-0. Wesley Williams proceeded to take a walk with the bases loaded to drive home the third run of the game. Luke Taylor would score on a passed ball to make it 4-0. Cass Fuller hit a two-run double to round out the scoring in the inning.

Handley got on the board with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning before adding two more in the fourth inning to cut the Callaway lead down to just two runs.

Handley was on the verge of trying the game in the top of the fifth, leading the bases with one out, but Jackson Butts, a sophomore who came into the game in relief, worked his way out of danger and preserved the lead. Butts was superb in his three innings in relief, striking out three batters while allowing just three hits.

The Cavaliers would go on to extend their lead in the bottom of the fifth courtesy of an RBI double by Taylor.

Taylor, Fuller, Williams, Blake Harrington and Slade Hunt all had a hit apiece for Callaway.

Harrington got the start on the mound for the Cavaliers and pitched a solid four innings in which he allowed just three hits and one earned run on seven strikeouts.

Callaway improved to 7-6 on the season and remained 1-2 in region play. The Cavaliers will return to the diamond on Wednesday in a rematch against Handley on the road.
