The Callaway baseball team had to dig deep to pull off a late rally and beat Lamar County 6-5 on Thursday on an extra-innings walk-off.
It was Junior Slade Hunt who played the hero. His single sent Jaxon Duncan home to score the winning run in the eighth inning.
“I was just running, I didn’t think I was even going to be safe,” Hunt said. “Next thing I know I look up and Jaxon (Duncan) is rounding third and heading home.”
It was the only hit and RBI on the night for Hunt, a guy who knows how to come through in the big moments even if he is not at his best.
“It wasn’t pretty, but sometimes you just have to find a way to grind out a win,” Hunt said.
The game was stuck scoreless until Lamar County broke the deadlock with four runs in the fourth inning. The Cavaliers were able to get two runs back in the bottom of the inning to halve the deficit. Junior Reeves would drive home both runs with a double.
Callaway would eventually take its first lead of the game with three runs in the sixth inning. Wesley Williams scored on a passed ball to cut the deficit to just one run. Carter Pelt got an RBI on a ground out to tie the game up. An error allowed a fifth run to score for Callaway, giving the home team a 5-4 lead.
The Trojans would rally to score on a steal of home with two outs and the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, extending the game.
Callaway had a chance to end it in the seventh inning, loading the bases with one out, but could not find a way to drive home the winning run.
After a scoreless top of the eighth inning, Hunt lifted the team to a win in the bottom of the inning.
Duncan had the only multi-hit game for Callaway with two hits while Hunt, Williams, Reeves, Kieron Pope and Blake Harrington all had a hit apiece.
Harrington got the start on the mound for Callaway, pitching 6 ⅔ innings before being replaced by Duncan.
Callaway has won three games in a row to improve to 9-6 overall. The Cavaliers will return to the diamond away to Rutland next Tuesday for a region matchup.
