Sheena Gay, Troup County Extension Agriculture and Natural Resources Agent with the University of Georgia, was recently named the 2024 Georgia Cattlewoman of the Year. This distinguished honor is awarded annually to an individual who goes above and beyond to educate, promote and protect the Georgia cattle industry and is awarded by the Georgia CattleWomen’s Association.
Sheena’s passion for the agriculture industry is extensive. Sheena graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Science from Auburn University and is currently working on her master’s degree in Animal Nutrition. In addition to her current role as Troup County Ag Agent, Sheena holds many positions within the agriculture industry. She is a Georgia Cattlewomen’s Director, Alabama Cattlewomen’s Board Member, Young Farmer Member, and has recently been elected to sit on the Alabama Farm Credit Young Farmers Advisory Board. These roles are in addition to the variety of roles she has fulfilled in University of Georgia Extension. She became the Troup County Ag Agent in 2023.
Within the county, Sheena has been instrumental in setting up an annual West Georgia Beef Tour, establishing the West Georgia Cattlewomen’s Chapter, and hosting local dairy and beef production meetings. Additionally, she performs farm visits, assists homeowners with a variety of needs, and offers horticulture and land management workshops for Troup County residents.
Always a team player, Sheena, finds time to assist her colleagues across the state in addition to facilitating local programming here in Troup County. She recently co-presented a Beef Quality Assurance certification at a Middle Georgia cattle farm and led dairy cattle sessions at Meriwether Farm Day. On winning the award, Sheena shared, “Thank you so much to Troup County for welcoming me with open arms almost two years ago. Time has flown by and I’m so thankful for this industry that brings us together every single day. I’m honored to receive this award just by doing what I love!”
Sheena and her husband, Jake, own a beef cattle operation and farm store in Alabama, where she runs the social media content for the farm, store, and business.
