At Tuesday’s Troup County School Board meeting, the board approved the superintendent’s recommendation to fund AP exam costs at all three of the base high schools in the district: Troup, LaGrange and Callaway High Schools. The funding will come out of the FY2025 general funds.
“The total cost will not exceed $55,000. We don’t have a total cost until we know how many have completed the course and will be taking the exam, but this does allow our students to take the exam at no cost to them,” said Dr. Rachel Hazel, TCSS Superintendent during Monday night’s work session.
The district has covered the cost of exams for the past few years, according to Ferrell Blair, the board chairman. The meeting notes say that this will have “an anticipated increase in student exam participation.”
The board approved the purchase of additional weapon detection for $71,658, paid for with FY2025 general security funds.
“These are portable weapons detection systems that would be used to enhance security at the stadium, as well as be used in the event that we need to replace any at any of our secondary schools,” Hazel explained.
Other items approved by the board on Tuesday were:
- A partnership with the Georgia School Boards Association (GSBA) to transition from a self insured workers’ compensation model to an insured plan with a $50,000 deductible
- Accept the FY2024 Financial audit of the district, done by Maudlin & Jenkins. The agency gave a “clean opinion” of the district in the audit, meaning there were no findings.
- The purchase of additional serving lines at Long Cane Elementary and Long Cane Middle school for $78,197.52. The purchase will be made using FY25 budgeted Nutrition funds.
