The Callaway baseball team blasted Rutland 17-4 on the road Tuesday.
It was all Cavaliers from the start as they scored 10 runs in the top of the first to take a commanding early lead. An error from the Hurricanes defense allowed the opening two runs to score. Four passed balls in a quick sequence allowed four additional runs to score. Slade Hunt hit a one-run single to make it 7-0. Luke Taylor tripled to bring home two runs. Blake Harrington doubled to drive home the 10th run of the game.
The Cavaliers continued to add to their lead, scoring six runs in the second inning. A passed ball allowed Cass Fuller to score the opening run of the inning. Kieron Pope doubled to drive home the second of the inning. A sacrifice fly from Jaxon Duncan made it 13-0. Hunt singled to drive home another run while Griffen Purgason walked with the bases loaded to send the fifth run of the inning home. Lashun Gates’ one-run single gave Callaway a 16-0 lead.
The Hurricanes added two runs in the third and two more in the fourth, but it barely made a dent in the Callaway lead.
The Cavaliers would add a run in the top of the fifth courtesy of a bases loaded walk from Hunt.
Hunt had a monster day, going 4-for-4 with three RBIs. Taylor finished with just one hit, but had four RBIs to his credit.
Gates had two hits while Pope and Harrington had one apiece.
Hunt got the start on the mound and pitched 3 ⅔ innings before making way for Gates and Wesley Williams.
