For the third time in the last four days, Callaway and Rutland met on the baseball diamond. The Cavaliers brought out the brooms and finished the sweep with a 7-3 win on Friday.
After a scoreless first inning, Callaway broke the game open with five runs in the top of the second.
Freshman Carter Pelt broke the deadlock with a two-run single. An error allowed the following two runs to score, giving the Cavaliers a 4-0 advantage. Slade Hunt drove in the final run of the inning with a single.
The Hurricanes eventually struck back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third but squandered an opportunity for more, leaving runners stranded on all three bases to end the inning.
Callaway quickly retook a 5-run lead by scoring two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Wesley Williams and Cass Fuller hit back-to-back RBI singles to give the Cavaliers a 7-2 lead.
The Hurricanes would get a consolation run in the bottom of the seventh, but the rally fell well short.
Pelt and Hunt led the Callaway offense with two hits apiece. Luke Taylor, Blake Harrington, Brody Swanson, Williams and Fuller finished with one hit each.
Jackson Butts earned the start on the mound and the win. Butts pitched a strong five innings in which he allowed just four hits and two earned runs in five strikeouts.
Jaxon Duncan pitched 1 ⅓ innings in relief. Hunt got the last two outs on the mound and ensured there was no route back for Rutland.
Callaway has now won six games in a row to improve to 12-6 overall and 4-2 in region play. The Cavaliers will return to action next Tuesday with a road game against region foe Jackson.
