The Callaway baseball team left it late on Monday, coming through in the seventh and final inning to earn a clutch 7-1 region win over Jackson.
With the game tied at a run apiece in the top of the seventh inning, Blake Harrington would be the hero as he showed great patience to take a walk with the bases loaded, driving in the winning run.
Callaway made sure to tack on a few endurance runs too, stretching the lead out to 7-1 heading to the bottom of the seventh.
Brody Swanson reached first safely on an error, allowing two additional runs to score. Wesley Williams and Lashun Gates would send the next two home with a single and double, respectively. A sacrifice fly from Carter Pelt would send the final run of the game home.
The game was mostly a pitcher’s duel until Callaway’s late surge. Before the seventh inning, each team scored just one run — both in the third inning. The Cavaliers scored first, with Luke Taylor driving home a run with a sacrifice fly. Callaway’s lead would be short-lived.
Jaxon Duncan led the Callaway offense with two hits while Swanson, Williams, Gates and Slade Hunt had one apiece.
Harrington got the start on the mound and dominated in his six innings of work, striking out three while allowing just one hit. Jackson Butts pitched the final inning and slammed the door on the Red Devils.
Callaway has now won seven games in a row to improve to 13-6 overall and 4-2 in the region. The Cavaliers will return to action on Friday with a home doubleheader against Jackson.
