Pure Life House of Music presents Multiple Latin Grammy Winner Alex Cuba, Friday, April 4, 2025, 7:30 P.M.
Alex Cuba, born Alexis Puentes in Artemisa, Cuba, defies conventional Latin music stereotypes with his sweet melodies and powerful guitar riffs. Immersed in music from a young age, he joined his father’s group (respected guitarist and teacher Valentin Puentes) of 24 guitarists and later studied electric guitar and upright bass. After moving to Victoria, B.C. in 1999, he recorded “Morumba Cubana” with his twin brother. His solo debut, “Humo De Tobaco,” won a Juno award (Canada’s GRAMMY equivalent) in 2006, followed by another for “Agua Del Pozo” in 2008. His self-titled 2009 album featured his first English track and garnered international recognition, earning him a Latin Grammy for Best New Artist in 2010.
Cuba’s accolades continued with a BMI Latin Award for his songwriting on Nelly Furtado’s hit and a Latin Grammy for “Toma Mi Vida.” His fifth album, “Healer,” released in 2016, won a Latin Grammy for Best Singer-songwriter. His sixth album, “Lo Unico Constante,” explored deeper songwriting roots and was nominated for multiple awards. In 2019, he produced his first self-produced collection with Latin American collaborators.
In 2021, he recorded “Mendó,” featuring international collaborations and a unique album artwork. Throughout his career, Alex Cuba has continually sought simplicity and soul in Cuban music, blending it with North American influences and folk traditions to create fresh, engaging sounds.
