The Troup baseball team outlasted a scrappy Upson-Lee team on Thursday, 8-7, for the team’s 10th win in a row.
It was the Knights that drew first blood on Thursday, scoring a run in the bottom of the first.
Troup had a quick answer in the top of the second, scoring a pair of runs to take the lead. An error allowed Trey Dean to score and tie the game. Garrison Edwards hit an RBI single to get the Tigers their first lead of the game.
That lead would be short-lived, with the Knights knotting the game up in the bottom of the second.
The back-and-forth nature of the game would continue with the Tigers retaking the lead with a trio of runs in the third inning. An error allowed the opening two runs of the inning to score. A Chase Mosley sacrifice bunt would make it 5-2, Troup.
The Tigers were able to get a bit of breathing room in the fourth inning as they scored three additional runs to take an 8-2 lead. Davis Moncus singled to bring home the inning’s opening run. Carson Walker would triple to send Moncus home and extend the Troup lead to 7-2. A Fisher Baltzell single drove home the final run of the inning for Troup.
Upson-Lee would not go quietly into the night and scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Knights added another run in the bottom of the fifth to cut the Troup lead to just two runs.
Upson-Lee scored a run in the seventh but could never get the tying run on base.
Edwards, Moncus, Walker, Baltzell and Ethan Goff all had two hits apiece for Troup. Torreion Delaney had one hit.
Jake Perry started on the mound and threw 3 ⅓ innings, allowing three hits and no earned runs on three strikeouts. Cason Spears and Baltzell came into the game in relief of Perry and kept the Tigers out in front.
Troup improved to 16-6 overall and 10-1 in the region. The Tigers will look to make it 11 wins in a row when they host Upson-Lee for a rematch on Friday.
