The Callaway baseball team brought out the brooms on Friday to sweep a doubleheader against Jackson at home. Both games were tightly contested, but the Cavaliers were able to get some early separation in both games and never looked back.
GAME ONE:
CALLAWAY – 3
JACKSON – 1
The Cavaliers would take an early lead in game one and never look back, despite a late rally attempt from the Red Devils. Callaway opened the scoring in the bottom of the first courtesy of a Luke Taylor RBI single and a Brody Swanson sacrifice fly.
A passed ball in the second inning would allow Callaway to stretch its lead out to 3-0.
The Cavaliers had a chance for more runs early but stranded a runner on third to end the first and left runners on all three bases to end the top of the second inning.
Jackson eventually got on the board with a run in the bottom of the sixth, but relief pitcher Blake Harrington did well to work around trouble, stranding the tying run on base. Harrington pitched the final two innings and slammed the door on any rally attempt by Jackson.
Slade Hunt started on the mound for Callaway and was excellent in his five innings of work, allowing just two hits and one earned run.
Jaxon Duncan led the way from the plate, going 3-for-3 with a run scored. Taylor and Harrington had two hits each, while Wesley Williams had one hit.
GAME TWO:
CALLAWAY – 12
JACKSON – 6
The Cavaliers took just slightly longer to break the deadlock in game two, scoring two runs in the second inning. Jeremiah Staples opened the scoring in style with a two-run homer.
The Red Devils would strike back with a run in the top of the second to halve the deficit. Callaway continued to plug away and stretched its lead out to 5-1 with three runs in the third inning. Harrington hit an RBI single to put the Cavaliers back up by two runs. Wesley Williams would drive home the final two runs of the inning with a single.
Jackson got right back into the game with three runs in the top of the fourth, cutting the Callaway lead down to just one run.
The Cavaliers were unfazed and scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth to stretch their lead out to five runs. Taylor singled to drive home the first run of the inning. Swanson hit a two-run single to give Callaway a 7-4 lead. Staples walked with the bases loaded to send home the following run. Lashun Gates grounded into a fielder’s choice to drive home the final run of the inning.
Jackson would not go away quietly and scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning to cut the Callaway lead to three runs.
Once again, the Callaway offense had a response. The Cavaliers got those two runs back in the bottom of the fifth courtesy of a Taylor RBI triple and a run scoring on a passed ball.
Gates scored on a steal of home in the bottom of the sixth inning for Callaway’s final run of the game.
Taylor and Swanson led the way for the Callaway offense with three hits apiece. Harrington and Hunt had two hits each while Duncan, Williams, Staples and Gates all had a hit.
Williams, Duncan, Harrington and Jackson Butts all saw time on the mound in game two for the Cavaliers.
WHAT’S NEXT:
Callaway has now won nine games in a row to improve to 15-6 overall and 6-2 in the region. The Cavaliers will return to the diamond next Tuesday with a trip across town to LaGrange High.
