For the first time since 2021, the Troup baseball team is the Region 2-3A champion. The Tigers demolished Sandy Creek 10-0 on Thursday to lock up the title while also tying their school record for consecutive wins with 14.
“It’s hard to even describe this feeling right now,” said senior Fisher Baltzell, who played JV as an eighth grader the last time Troup won a region title. “That feeling when we got the final out will stick with me for a while.”
What makes the Tigers’ run this season all the more impressive is the fact that they clinched the region title with two region games still to go.
“We thought we would have to wait until the next series, which makes this such a tremendous accomplishment,” Troup coach Tanner Glisson said. “This is an extremely tough region and to go into next week’s games with the pressure off us is huge.”
It would not take Troup long to break the deadlock on Thursday, putting three runs past the Patriots in the first inning. Davis Moncus hit a solo home run to get the action started.
Chase Mosley tripled to drive in the following two runs of the inning.
The Tigers blew the game wide open with six runs in the second inning.
The anticipation in the dugout began to build.
“We tried to stay locked in,” said senior Ethan Goff, who made a couple of tremendous catches at first base on Thursday. “Being a part of this team is special.”
Garrison Edwards stole home for the first run of the inning. Carson Walker drove in the second run with a double. Mosley walked with the bases loaded to give Troup a 6-0 lead. Two straight wild pitches would allow the following two runs to score. Courtney Wilson knocked in the final run of the inning with a single.
The game would stay locked at 9-0 until the Tigers added to their lead with a run in the fourth inning courtesy of a Mosley sacrifice fly.
Sandy Creek staved off the mercy rule in the top of the fifth inning by scoring a pair of runs, but the outcome was never in doubt.
“There are really no words to describe that feeling when the game ended,” Goff said. “This is one of those things we have been working all season for.”
Wilson led the way for the Troup offense with two hits while Edwards, Moncus, Walker, Mosley and Torreion Delaney all had a hit apiece for the Tigers. Mosley led the team with four RBIs.
Moncus started on the mound and threw three innings in which he allowed just three hits on six strikeouts. Mosley and Rylan Cantrell each pitched an inning in relief, while Carson Williams got two innings of work on the mound.
Troup is now 20-6 overall and 13-1 in region play. The Tigers will seek their record-breaking 15th straight win at home against Lafayette Christian on Monday.
“We come into every game trying to show that we are the best team in 3A,” Fisher said about the team’s winning streak. “Every time we take the field, we want to prove we are the best team.”
Despite claiming the region championship with games still to go in the regular season, Glisson is not worried about his team’s approach going forward.
“These guys are hungry,” Glisson said. “We may give them a day off tomorrow to celebrate, but these guys are hungry for more. They got a taste of the Elite Eight last year, and they are motivated to go even further this season.”
