Callaway splits doubleheader with Morgan County

The Callaway and Morgan County baseball teams met for a doubleheader on the diamond on Friday, with the teams splitting the game. Unfortunately for the Cavaliers, winning one game was enough for the Bulldogs to claim the region championship.
GAME ONE:
CALLAWAY – 0
MORGAN COUNTY – 3
The opening game of the series saw a real pitcher’s duel between the two teams. Slade Hunt pitched a complete game for the Cavaliers, allowing six hits and no earned runs on five strikeouts.
Errors doomed Callawa,y with the team combining for four in the game, which allowed all three runs to reach home.
The Bulldogs would open the scoring with a run in the top of the first and never looked back from there. Morgan County eventually added a pair of runs in the top of the sixth.
Blake Harrington, Brody Swanson, Jeremiah Staples and Kieron Pope all had a hit apiece for the Cavaliers.
GAME TWO:
CALLAWAY – 6
MORGAN COUNTY – 4
After going seven scoreless innings in the first game, Callaway would not be denied in game two. The Cavaliers drew first blood in the contest with a trio of runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Harrington singled to drive home the first run of the game. Junior Reeves scored on a passed ball, while Wesley Williams sent the final run of the inning home with a sacrifice fly.
The Cavaliers added to their lead in the second inning courtesy of a Hunt RBI single.
The Bulldogs would halve the deficit in the top of the third with a pair of runs.
Callaway would reply in short order with two runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-2 advantage. Lashun Gates singled to drive home the first, while a Luke Taylor double drove home the second.
Morgan County made the game interesting late, scoring two runs in the sixth inning to cut the Callaway lead down to just two runs.
While the offense struggled in game one, the bats were hot in the second game of the evening. Hunt led the Cavaliers with two hits while Jaxon Duncan, Taylor, Harrington, Williams, Swanson, Staples and Gates all had a hit apiece.
Harrington started on the mound for Callaway and gave the team a strong six innings of work in which he allowed just six hits and no earned runs on five strikeouts. Jackson Butts pitched the final inning for Callaway and earned the save.
Errors would plague Callaway in game two as well as all four runs scored by Morgan County were unearned.
WHAT’S NEXT:
Callaway is now 16-8 overall and 8-3 in the region.. The Cavaliers will rematch Morgan County on the road on Saturday to wrap up region play.
