Young men at LaGrange College are reigniting the local Walk a Mile in Her Shoes campaign with a fundraiser for Harmony House.
On Saturday, fraternity brothers from LaGrange College will walk from the west side of campus to the Plaza on the Hill, wearing women’s shoes to shine a light on sexual violence and domestic abuse.
LaGrange College student Eli Glisman said the Interfraternity Council organized the effort to raise awareness about the abuse women face and raise money for Harmony House, a domestic violence shelter in LaGrange.
“We know these things happen on every college campus, and we’re just looking for a way to help by bringing awareness and to show how we can help people,” Glisman said. “We thought this event is a really good way for us to bring awareness and fundraise for Harmony House because Harmony House is all about providing shelter and counseling for women who are victims of sexual assault or domestic abuse.”
“Whoever else sees us doing these events, just know that we are willing to help them, and know, as men willing to stand up against sexual assault or domestic abuse,” Glisman said.
Similar events have been held to fundraise for Harmony House in the past, but the LaGrange College Interfraternity Council is bringing it back and hoping to make it an annual event.
Glisman said this year’s event is only for LaGrange College students, but next year, they are hoping to open it up to the whole city.
On Saturday morning, the boys will march from West Side to The Hill wearing heels, pumps, flats and other items depending on how much money they can raise. Glisman said the fraternity presidents would wear items ranging from tutus and wigs to full makeup based on their fundraising goals.
“Right now, all of the presidents will have to wear a tutu, a tank top and a wig,” he said. “It’s just a fun way for people to want to raise money so they can see their own brothers wear these things.”
Glisman said Michelle Bedingfield from Harmony House will be providing the shoes. She said some of the boys have insisted on flats because they are athletes and don’t want their coach to be mad at them for getting a sprained ankle trying to wear heels.
Registration for the walk will begin at the former West Side Magnet School at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning and begin around 10:45 a.m. The boys will walk from west campus down Panther Parkway toward LaGrange College through the light and then up the stairs to the plaza.
