At approximately 10:13 pm on April 10th, 2025, the LaGrange Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire on the 700 block of Lakewood Drive. Engine 4 was the first unit to arrive on the scene, finding flames visible from the roof of a two-story split-level residence.
Upon arrival, it was confirmed that the occupant had safely exited the structure. Firefighters quickly initiated an aggressive interior attack; however, challenges arose due to the complex attic space with multiple compartments. These types of compartments can conceal the fire and trap heat and smoke, making accessing the flames difficult. Other units, including the Troup County Fire Department, were assigned other tasks, including defensive operations, RIT, and salvage of known valuables on the lower floor of the residence. The fire was eventually brought under control at approximately 11:09 pm.
Units remained on-site throughout the night to monitor and extinguish any remaining hot spots. The structure, valued at approximately $278,000, has been deemed a total loss. During the incident, one firefighter sustained an injury, was transported to a local medical center for treatment, and has been released.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, with Troup County fire investigators assisting. Preliminary assessments indicate that lightning was a contributing factor. Firefighters faced additional obstacles due to the severe weather conditions, including heavy lightning, which impeded their efforts to quickly control the fire.
