Beginning Monday, April 14, the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) will begin a project in Troup County to install new traffic signals on Lafayette Parkway (SR 109) at the I-85 Northbound ramps.

According to GDOT Communications Officer Gina Snider, lane closures are expected but will be kept to a minimum.

The contractor installing the signals will have 120 days to complete the project, but it is not expected to take that long.

Drivers are asked to use caution in the area while workers install the new signals.

GDOT uses traffic signals to manage and regulate traffic flow, improve safety, and reduce congestion. GDOT’s Regional Traffic Operations Program (RTOP) utilizes advanced signal timing and detection technologies to optimize traffic flow.

GDOT uses signal timing and detection technologies to adjust signal cycles and phasing based on real-time traffic conditions, maximizing capacity and minimizing delays. Traffic signals help to separate conflicting traffic movements, reducing the likelihood of crashes, especially at intersections.

By optimizing signal timing, GDOT aims to reduce delays, back-ups, and idling, which in turn reduces fuel consumption and emissions.

GDOT utilizes a centralized software system to monitor traffic signals 24/7, quickly identifying and addressing any malfunctions or performance issues.

GDOT says the dates may change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are advised to expect delays, exercise caution, and reduce their speed while traveling through work zones.
