The Callaway baseball team split a doubleheader n the first round fo the stat playoffs with Coahulla on Friday, setting up a winner-take-all game 3 on Saturday, weather permitting.

GAME ONE:

Callaway – 3

Coahulla – 0

Game one belonged to the dominance of starting pitcher Blake Harrington. The junior pitched a complete game, allowing just two hits on nine strikeouts.

It was a real pitcher’s duel for the large majority of the contest, but the Cavaliers finally broke through with a run in the fourth inning courtesy of an error by the defense.

Callaway would get some breathing room with a pair of runs in the fifth inning. Jaxon Duncan and Slade Hunt hit back-to-back RBI singles to give the Cavaliers a 3-0 advantage.

Duncan and Jeremiah Staples led the Cavaliers with two hits each while Hunt and Wesley Williams had one apiece.

GAME TWO:

Callaway – 1

Coahulla – 7

The Colts drew first blood in game two with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning after a scoreless top of the inning for Callaway.

Coahulla tacked on an additional run to its lead in the top of the fifth inning and had a chance for more, but relief pitcher Jackson Butts pitched the Cavaliers out of trouble, leaving runners stranded on all three bases.

Callaway tried to get a rally going in the sixth inning. The Cavaliers got on the board when Hunt scored on a passed ball, but the team left a runner stranded on third base to end the inning.

The Colts responded with four runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Wesley Williams started on the mound for Callaway and went 4 ⅓ innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs on eight strikeouts. Butts and Gates combined to pitch the final two innings.

Offense was hard to come by for the Cavaliers in game two with the team mustering just four hits with Williams, Harrington having one each and Gates leading the team with two.

WHAT’S NEXT:

The Cavaliers will play a winner-take-all game three at Callaway High School at noon on Saturday with a spot in the Sweet 16 on the line.
