The LaGrange High golf program enjoyed one of the most successful weeks they have had in quite some time this week. The girls won the Area 1-3A championship on Tuesday with junior Caroline Brown earning low medalist honors and the boys won the championship on Thursday as Charlie Pitts won a playoff to earn the title of Area 1-3A low medalist.

“I never even think about winning low medalist or anything like that, I just go out there and play,” Pitts said.

It was an action-packed two days at Callaway Gardens. Teams from across West and South Georgia came together to compete for the area championships, including LaGrange and Troup. With the top three teams qualifying for the state tournament, there was a lot on the line beyond just who finished in first place.

GIRLS RESULTS:

On Wednesday, the LaGrange girls team absolutely dominated the tournament. The Grangers won the tournament by a whopping 40 strokes over runner-up Bainbridge. Only the top two scores from each team counted, but the Grangers would have had the winning score with any combination of the four players on the cours,e with the team shooting four of the five lowest scores on the day.

Brown shot 89 to take the title of low medalist. Senior Syndee Jennings shot 101 to finish in second place, while fellow senior Hudson Wood finished in third place with a score of 102. Zoe  Thompson shot 114 to finish in fifth place.

A young Troup girls team finished in seventh place. Sophomore Kennedy McCoy led the Tigers with a score of 128. Kayleigh Godfrey shot 131 while Rachel Langford and Shaylee Hurst shot 160 and 168, respectively.

BOYS RESULTS:

The Granger boys had to sweat a little but more than their female counterparts to earn the victory, shooting a combined 319 to beat second-place Cairo by 12 strokes. It was a phenomenal round for Pitts, who shot 76 and won a one-hole playoff with a bogey to claim the low medalist title.

“I was pretty nervous, but I went out there with the goal to just hit the fairway, hit a good approach shot and not worry about what the other guy is doing,” Pitts said. “Once I hit the fairway off the tee, I started to feel more confident.”

Hugh Kersey shot 80 to finish in fifth place. Saxon Chastain shot 81 while Grady Westmorland and Drew Burch both shot 82. Freshman Andrew Terrell shot 93.

This was the second straight area championship for the boys team.

“I know whether I won or lost, these guys always have my back,” Pitts said. “This group is very special.”

With just the top three teams making the cut for state, the Troup Tigers’ seventh-place finish was not enough to see them make the cut. Sophomore Drew Pearson led the way for Troup, shooting 90 to finish in 15th place. McCarty Harrelson shot 94. Buseung Park and Danny Le shot 102 and 104, respectively. Carson Thompson finished with a score of 116 and Preston Knotts rounded out the Tigers on the course by shooting 120.

STATE CHAMPIONSHIP:

LaGrange will host the GHSA 3A boys and girls two-day state championships at Highland Country Club on May 19-20.
