It may seem a daunting task to weave together a choral concert about love and war – from one extreme to the other – but Stacey Hardigree took on that challenge to produce Young Singers of West Georgia Spring concert, “Love and War.” The show will be at 7 p.m. May 1-2 at LaGrange High School Auditorium .
Hardigree, conductor and artistic director of Young Singers, said she worked to create a powerful, musical experience that explores the enduring relationship between human conflict and the universal desire for love and peace.
“From the heartbreak of forbidden romance to the patriotic resolve of wartime resilience, this dynamic production brings together student voices of all ages in a genre-spanning concert that moves through Broadway, classical, folk music and more,” she said.
Audiences will be swept away by favorites from “Sound of Music,” “Les Misérables,” “Miss Saigon,” “Hamilton,” “Dido and Aeneas” and more.
Also featured are some of the seniors, most of whom have been a part of YSWG for most of their school years.
Tomas Urroz-Arena, a 10-year member from LaGrange High School, will be portraying Aaron Burr in selections from “Hamilton” as well as both main characters at once from “Jekyll & Hyde” in “Confrontation” where the two characters collide at war internally.
Aaron Kemper from LaGrange High will fill the role of Hamilton, and Griffin Beall, also from LaGrange High, will represent the anti-war movement with a self-accompanied rendition of a Bob Dylan song. Lilly Barber, also a 10-year member from LaGrange High, will perform “We’ll Meet Again,” a famous Vera Lynn song performed in USO shows in the 1940s.
Young Singers alum Hannah Penn will be performing the part of Maria Rainer in the “Sound of Music” with our younger choirs.
Penn is a 2017 graduate from LaGrange High School who went on to obtain a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre followed by extensive work in film and TV produced by Netflix, Starz, Fox and NBC as well as independent theatrical projects in Los Angeles as production designer, assistant director and producer.
“LaGrange is happy to welcome her home to perform again,” Hardigree said.
The concert blends solemn reflection with patriotic celebration, lighthearted charm and timeless messages of unity, she said.
“Whether through the stirring harmonies of ‘America the Beautiful’ or the flirtatious fun of ‘There Is Nothin’ Like a Dame,’ the show reminds us of music’s power to heal, uplift, and bring people together.”
