The Callaway boys soccer team saw its season end in heartbreaking fashion in the Sweet 16 of the 2A state playoffs on Friday, falling to Crisp County 3-1.
It was a tightly contested affair between the two teams, especially in the first half. The Cavaliers would actually open the scoring on a Jayden Bailey free kick 13 minutes into the game.
Both teams had their chances before the goal, but it was Bailey’s kick that proved decisive early.
Rickey Vaughn had a chance to open the scoring eight minutes into the game, but his shot was blasted directly at the goalkeeper, who made the save.
The Cougars would rally, scoring just three minutes later to knot the game up at a goal apiece.
The second half was largely dominated by the Cougars as Callaway struggled to possess the ball in the opponent’s half.
Crisp County would eventually find the winning goal with just under 20 minutes left in the game. The Cougars would ice the game with a goal in the final 12 minutes of the second half.
Brayden Morris made save after save in goal for Callaway, coming away with six in total to the away side in the game. The senior earned every bit of his offer from Point University, where he plans to continue his athletic and academic career.
The Cavaliers will look to replace five seniors — Robbie Dorman, Angel Vasquez, Christian Cook, Kaydon Pike and Morris.
The Callaway boys soccer team will host a 7v7 competition during the summer before officially returning to action in 2026.
