The Callaway baseball team saw its 2025 season come to an end on Wednesday as the Cavaliers fell to Rockmart in the 2A state quarterfinals. Callaway pushed the Yellow Jackets to the limit, losing by a combined two runs, but ended up getting swept in a heartbreaking doubleheader on the road.
GAME ONE:
CALLAWAY – 1
ROCKMART – 2
The Cavaliers came out on the wrong side of a pitcher’s duel in game one. Blake Harrington gave it his all, pitching a six-inning complete game. The junior allowed just four hits and one earned run on six strikeouts.
The Cavaliers actually outhit the Yellow Jackets (6-4), but could not stack timely hits together.
Rockmart broke the deadlock with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Callaway attempted a late rally, getting the tying run all the way to third base, but fell short of extending the game. With two on and two out, Slade Hunt delivered an RBI single and moved the tying run to third base. Jaxon Duncan was left agonizingly at third base for the road fans who made the trip just south of Rome.
Hunt, Duncan, Lashun Gates, Jeremiah Staples, Brody Swanson and Wesley Williams all had a hit apiece for Callaway.
GAME TWO:
CALLAWAY – 3
ROCKMART – 4
The Cavaliers took the momentum from the end of game one into game two. Callaway took an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Luke Taylor hit a two-run single to start the scoring.
The Yellow Jackets would strike back with a run in the top of the third before eventually taking their first lead of the game in the top of the fourth with two runs.
Rockmart tacked on an additional run in the sixth inning to take a 4-2 advantage.
The Cavaliers got a rally going in the sixth inning, scoring a run to trim the deficit to just one run, but leaving runners stranded on all three bases to end the inning.
That would prove costly as Callaway failed to score in the seventh inning to extend the game, as the team left the tying run on first base to end the game.
Hunt gave the Cavaliers a strong showing on the mound, pitching a complete game in which he allowed seven hits and four earned runs.
Hits were hard to come by for Callaway, with the team combining for just seven in total. Duncan and Harrington led the way with two hits while Williams, Taylor, Swanson and Staples all had one apiece.
WHAT’S NEXT:
The Cavaliers will return to the diamond in the new year with almost their entire team intact from this season. Callaway will graduate just three seniors from this year’s team —- Duncan, Gates and Junior Reeves.
