The Callaway girls soccer season came to a close with a round of 16 loss to Columbus last week, but the individual accolades are just starting to pour in. None of those awards were quite as prestigious as the two garnered by head coach Mike Petite and sophomore star Sofia Flores. The dynamic duo was named the 2A DiVarsity coach and player of the year.
“I was really surprised, but also very excited,” Flores said. “It wasn’t something I was even thinking about.”
Flores was not the only Cavalier who was surprised to see their name on the award list sent out.
“I was 100% shocked,” Petite said. “But I was really, really happy for Sofia.”
The Cavaliers outperformed expectations this season. Callaway ended the season with a record of 14-6 and earned their first playoff win since 2018.
“We probably outperformed all the expectations we had,” Petite said. “We graduated 10 players from last year’s team, and Sofia was one of the only players from last year’s team who came into this season having played significant minutes for us. We basically had a bunch of sophomores and freshmen carry us this year, and we didn’t take a step back.”
Petite just wrapped his fourth season in charge of the girls’ program and has compiled a record of 46-21 as head coach.
Flores enjoyed a breakout campaign in 2025. As a freshman in 2024, Flores was an important piece of the midfield. This season, she transitioned from midfield to attacker and has flourished, leading the team with 27 goals and 14 assists to go along with 35 chances created.
“I like midfield, but I was kind of excited to be closer to the goal and learn a new position,” Flores said, cracking a wry smile. “Scoring and creating goals is a lot of fun.”
The transition from midfield, where Flores still plays for her club team, to attacker came with its fair share of difficulties at times. Flores ended up forging a strong partnership with senior Bianka Sola, who was a first-year soccer player.
“Bianka was such a good leader, and she was always asking questions,” Flores said. “I’m sad that we only got to play together for a year.”
Flores comes from a soccer lineage. Her older sister played at Callaway before joining the Point University soccer team, and her younger sister will be playing with the high school team next spring as a freshman.
“Honestly, we play in the same position, so we will probably be butting heads,” Flores said, laughing.
The Flores sisters are just two of the pieces that have Petite excited about the future. The duo was joined on the DiVasity All-Star teams by sophomore midfielder Becca Bryan, who transferred from Lafayette Christian this year and made an easy transition to the soccer pitch for the Cavaliers.
“Those are two young girls that will get to play in this game, which includes players from A up to 6A,” Petite said. “It will be a competitive game and good for these two girls.”
