The 2025 LaGrange High golf season has not even wrapped yet, and the individual accolades are already starting to pour in for the Grangers. Three members of this year’s program, Caroline Brown, Saxon Chastain and Charlie Pitts, were named to the Georgia High School Golf Coaches Association South All-Star team.
“It’s a testament to the depth of our program that we got two guys. Two years in a row, we’ve had two guys play in the north, south, all star match. And the first time, I don’t know if Sydney (Ormby) ever played in a lot, but the first time in a while, if not ever, that we’ve had a girl playing with Caroline’s selection,” head gold coach Ben Thrasher said.
The Grangers had two players make the team last season, with Chastain being one of them. The junior is looking forward to taking part in his second All-Star tournament.
“It’s a lot of fun and it will be great to have Charlie out there with me,” Chastain said. “Ty (Ormsby) was able to go last year, and it was good to have somebody else there to lean on.”
This time, Chastain will be joined by one of his best friends in Pitts. The two juniors have been golfing since they were tykes, and the All-Star tournament will be another golfing memory the two will share together.
“We’ve known each other practically all our lives,” Pitts said. “I think we met when we were two years old.”
“I don’t even remember meeting Charlie, he’s just always been in my life,” Chastain added.
Chastain has had mixed feelings on his season. Calling it “up-and-down” compared to years past. Despite this, Chastain is still averaging a score of 77.5 per round, which currently leads the team.
Pitts, on the other hand, had his best season yet. The former soccer player put together an average scoring round of 79.8 this season and earned the low medalist honors at the Area 1-3A tournament.
“It feels really good,” Pitts said of becoming area champion. “I was so nervous going to the playoff, but once I bombed the tee shot down the middle, I felt super confident. It’s something that will stick with me for the rest of my life.”
“The way Charlie finished the season really stood out for me,” Thrasher said. “You can see that he is a guy who wants to be really good and wants to compete wherever he plays.”
Brown, the lone female Granger to make the All-Star team, was also the low medalist at the Area 1-3A tournament. While Pitts had to go to a playoff, Brown lapped the field and won by double-digit strokes.
This has given Brown a boost of confidence as she heads to the state and the All-Star tournament in the coming weeks.
“Honestly, I didn’t expect to get picked for the All-Star team,” she said. “I’m pretty excited, but also nervous because I have seen some of the girls who got selected play before, and they are all really, really good.”
There is little doubt who the LaGrange girls’ No. 1 golfer is. Brown put together one of the best seasons a female golfer has had in years at LaGrange High, averaging a score of 89 per round.
As a freshman, Brown regularly shot around 110. The growth she has shown over the last two years is immeasurable, and she continues to get better.
“My scoring was up and down at the start of the year, but once I got my putting figured out, I was able to start shooting in the 80s consistently,” Brown said.
This will be Brown’s first time competing in the tournament.
“She has aspirations to play college golf, and to go and put herself in a situation where she’s around those girls, and to kind of see how they approach the game and operate it’ll be different for her, but I think it will be rewarding,” Thrasher said.
All three of these Grangers have yet to wrap their junior seasons. The trio will be in action at Highland Country Club for the GHSA 3A state tournament on May 19-20.
“It’s kind of sad because we are losing three seniors that I’ve been playing with since I started here,” Brown said. “We still have one more tournament together, though.”
The GHSGCA All-Star tournament will be held at the Sunset Country Club in Moultrie on June 10-12.
