Five Callaway football players signed to play at the next level on Monday. In front of a packed gymnasium, BreShun Hall, Kavius Leonard, Lason Blackmon, Curt Willis and Tyren Buggs all signed to play in various colleges across the country.
Hall, a two-way star for the Cavaliers, will be making his way to Hampton University.
“When I went up there for a visit, everything went good and I just made a connection with the school,” he said.
It was a tumultuous journey for Hall at times. The Callaway senior had to sit out his junior season after transferring in during the summer prior. Hall then suffered an injury that knocked him out of the first few games of the season.
Once Hall actually got on the field for the Cavaliers, he made an instant impact. As a senior, Hall tallied 32 carries for 209 yards to go along with 5 catches for 150 yards and 8 total touchdowns. Hall also played on defense and is expected to make the transition to Hampton as a defensive end.
“They recruited me as a defensive end,” Hall said. “I’ll play wherever they ask me to.”
Leonard had no shortage of college offers. The senior defensive back weighed Division I offers alongside strong Division II offers from the likes of Valdosta State, among others. The Blazers winning the national championship last season helped sway Leonard.
“I can’t lie, I saw that they won the national championship last year and that got my interest,” Leonard said. “The more I talked with the coaches, I could tell they were all about winning.
“They also have a great cybersecurity program there, and it felt like a school that could help me beyond football.”
Leonard flew around in the Callaway secondary during his time as a Cavalier. As a senior, he racked up 55 tackles, nine PBUs and an interception.
Leonard played cornerback and safety during his time as a Cavalier, but the latter is his most natural position.
“I feel comfortable anywhere, but safety is definitely the most fun,” Leonard said, flashing a grin. “I love coming down and hitting someone.”
The Cavaliers are sending a pair of offensive linemen to Point University. Blackmon and Willis will be keeping the good times rolling as Skyhawks.
Blackmon transferred into Callaway before his junior year and quickly found his way into the starting lineup. The senior became entrenched at the right tackle spot.
“I’ve spent most of my career at right tackle, so that is where I feel at home,” Blackmon said.
Point’s offer has been a real blessing for Blackmon.
“I wouldn’t be going to college if Point didn’t make me an offer,” Blackmon said. “This has been a real blessing with the cost of college, I probably wouldn’t be able to afford it without football.”
Willis has played all across the offensive line during his high school career, but felt most comfortable in the middle of the line at center.
“I have moved positions every single year,” Willis said, chuckling. “My freshman year, I played right role, and then my sophomore year I was at left guard, and then last year at right guard. Then they moved me to the center for my senior year.”
Willis is looking forward to focusing on the interior of the offensive line.
“I think I can come in right away and start improving,” Willis said. “This feels like a place where I can do that.”
Buggs will be staying in the peach state. The bruising running back signed to continue his football career at Andrew College.
“They want me as a running back, but I can play a little linebacker too,” Buggs said, grinning from ear to ear.
The Callaway senior missed part of his senior season with a knee injury, one of the most difficult periods of his young life.
“I feel like that definitely affected my recruiting,” Buggs said. “I didn’t have a lot of offers coming out, so I’m blessed that Andrew gave me a chance.”
Buggs led the Cavaliers in rushing yards (955) and rushing touchdowns (17) during his final season in red and black.
