The shorthanded Troup football team suffered a 19-6 loss in their spring game against Newnan on Thursday.
The Tigers were without a litany of their most talented players, including the top two quarterbacks, Garrison Edwards and Chase Mosley, as they prepare for the 3A baseball state championship series next week.
The Troup offense struggled without its starting and backup quarterbacks.
The Tigers would take the first lead in the game when McCarty Harrelson connected on a 41-yard field goal to cap off Troup’s opening drive on offense.
This was set up by some strong defensive play. KJ McQueen got a defensive stop on the first play from scrimmage before completely blowing up the Cougars’ initial drive with a sack on second down.
The Cougars would eventually take their first lead of the game with a 49-yard pass with 40 seconds left in the first quarter.
Newnan added a second touchdown to take a 13-3 lead with 4:07 left in the first half.
The Tigers got into the red zone for the first time on the final drive of the half, but settled for a field goal attempt that Harrelson hit to cut the Cougar lead to one score (13-6).
The second half was a stalemate as the two JV rosters battled it out. The Cougars found the end zone for a third time on the night with just over seven minutes left in the contest.
