The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Mobile District, will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the dedication of West Point Dam and Powerhouse in June. Originally dedicated in  1975, the dam and lake have provided five decades of service to the region through hydropower,  recreation, water quality, and flood risk management.  

A public celebration ceremony is planned for Friday, June 13, at the Hardley Creek Recreation Area. 

The event will be free to the public. Special invitations will be extended to individuals involved in the  construction and operation of the dam, including former USACE employees and contractors. 

Organizers are currently trying to locate former staff and are seeking photos or memorabilia from the  construction period to showcase during the event. All items will be returned to their owners after the  celebration. Those with information or materials to share are encouraged to contact Park Ranger Susan  Cromer at (706) 645-2937.  

To help the public join in the celebration, all Corps-operated day-use parks at West Point Lake will  waive entrance fees from June 13-15. 

“We want as many people as possible to help commemorate the golden anniversary of West Point  Project,” said Jay Jamison, Operations Project manager. “We’re waiving day-use park fees on those  days, so everyone has the chance to enjoy the lake and be part of this milestone.” 

Additional events will take place throughout 2025 to mark the anniversary, including a children’s art  contest, dam tours, a lake clean-up, and fishing rodeos. Details will be announced later, follow U.S.  Army Corps of Engineers, West Point Lake on Facebook to stay informed.
