The GHSA AAA Boys and Girls State golf tournaments got underway at Highland Country Club on Monday. After round one, the boys are in second place while the girls are in seventh place.

The boys put together one of their best rounds in recent years, considering the pressure. LaGrange sits five strokes back from West Laurens after shooting a combined score of 314 on Monday. Charlie Pitts, the low medalist at the Area 1-3A tournament, continued his torrid streak, only shooting a 75, good enough for second place in the field and just one stroke back from the leader — Brody Graham from West Laurens.

Saxon Chastain shot a 77, which is tied for sixth place. Grady Westmorland shot 79 while Hugh Kersey shot 81. Freshmen Drew Burch and Andrew Terrell shot 83 and 87, respectively.

The Grangers lead third-place Oconee County by 12 strokes. LaGrange last won a state title in golf in 1950.

The LaGrange girls combined to shoot 198. LaGrange sits 24 strokes back from North Hall in the lead. The Grangers are five strokes behind Calhoun in sixth place.

Caroline Brown led the way for LaGrange with a round of 92. Sydnee Jennings and Hudson Wood shot 107 and 106, respectively. Zoe Thompson, in her final round of golf with the Grangers, shot 119. Katie Hale will fill the fourth spot for LaGrange on Tuesday.

The Granger girls will tee off at 9:20 while the boys will tee off at 2:10.
