The GHSA AAA Boys and Girls State golf tournaments wrapped up day two at Highland Country Club on Tuesday. The LaGrange boys finished in third place while the girls finished in seventh place.
The boys put together one of their best tournaments in recent years, considering the pressure. LaGrange sat five strokes back from West Laurens after shooting a combined score of 314 on Monday, but ran out of steam in round two on Tuesday and could not catch the eventual champions. The Grangers would end up falling behind second-place North Hall by just two strokes.
Charlie Pitts, the low medalist at the Area 1-3A tournament, continued his torrid streak, shooting a 75 on Monday, good enough for second place in the field and just one stroke back from the leader — Brody Graham from West Laurens —- after round one. Pitts could not match the momentum in round two, but still finished in third place with a two-day combined score of 155, just two strokes behind the runner-up.
Saxon Chastain shot a 77 on day one, which was tied for sixth place. Chastain could not find the same momentum in round two and shot an 89. Senior Grady Westmorland shot 163 in his final tournament in blue and white, finishing in a tie for 13th place. Hugh Kersey shot 81. Freshmen Drew Burch and Andrew Terrell shot 165 and 176, respectively. The Grangers lead third-place Oconee County by 12 strokes. LaGrange last won a state title in golf in 1950.
The LaGrange girls combined to shoot 198 on day one and 200 on day two for a two-day score of 398. LaGrange finished in seventh place, four spots better than last year’s 11th-place finish at the AAAA state tournament at The Fields.
The Grangers finished five strokes behind Calhoun in sixth place and 16 strokes ahead of Adairsville in eighth.
Caroline Brown led the way for LaGange with a round of 92 on day one and 95 in round two on Tuesday for a combined score of 187. Sydnee Jennings and Hudson Wood shot 107 and 106 on day one, respectively. Wood shot 106 on day two while Jennings finished at 105.
Zoe Thompson, in her final round of golf with the Grangers on Monday, shot 119. Katie Hale filled the fourth spot for LaGrange on Tuesday and shot 114.
While the girls will have to do some retooling with three graduating seniors, the boys will reload and try again next year with almost the same lineup. The boys will see Westmorland graduate, a part-time player who split time between baseball and golf in the spring.
