The West Georgia Veterans Council is seeking volunteers to place flags on the graves of deceased veterans.

The council provides the mini American flags each year to pay respect to fallen veterans on Memorial Day.

Veteran Bernard Bledsoe of the Marine Corps League said the tradition dates back to at least the 1970s,

The council is seeking help from the public to place the flag markers on Sunday, May 25, starting at 1 p.m. at Shadowlawn Cemetery in LaGrange. Around 1300 vets are buried in the cemetery.

Don’t worry. The Veterans Council knows which graves are vets. Volunteers don’t need to bring anything other than a willingness to help honor fallen veterans.

Bledsoe said they will return on Tuesday, May 27, to pick up the flags. Volunteers are invited to help out then, too.

Shadowlawn Cemetery is located off New Franklin Road in LaGrange.
