With the unofficial start of summer and Memorial Day weekend coming up, Troup County is ready to beat the heat. The Don Weatherington Aquatic Center at the William J. Griggs Center opens this Saturday, May 24.
The pool opens at 11 a.m. on Saturday and will be open through Labor Day.
Regular public swimming hours will resume next week, with swimming lesson sessions beginning in June.
The pool will be open seven days a week from May 24 to July 27 and on the weekends once school starts on Aug.1 through Aug. 30. The pool opens Monday through Thursday at noon, at 10 a.m. on Friday, at 11 a.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday. Once school starts back on Aug. 1, the pool will only open on the weekend starting at noon on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday through Aug. 30. The pool closes each day at 5 p.m.
Swim lesions are set to start back up too. Facilities Manager JJ Kuerzi said they plan to have four two-week swim lesson sessions, with two in June and two in July, leading up to the start of school.
The swim classes are Monday through Thursday, with morning and evening classes. Kuerzi said they also have adult swim classes.
“Last year, because we were only open for a short time, we did not offer evening lessons. But this year I’m offering morning and evening lessons,” Kuerzi said. “Last year I offered Saturday lessons for people who couldn’t make the morning classes, but we are not doing the Saturday morning lessons this year.
“We will still be offering the water aerobics on Saturday mornings,” she said.
Pool entry is $2 per child and $3 per adult, or admission is included with a Griggs Center Membership.
The Don Weatherington Aquatic Center is located at 716 Glenn Robertson Drive in LaGrange.
