The week-long scouting summer camp, Camp Cowpie, is set to return on June 9.

The youth camp is a local tradition dating back more than half a century. Camp Cowpie is a day camp program from Scouting America (formerly Boy Scouts of America) Chattahoochee Council.

Camp Director Martha Evans said the camp is for Cub Scout-aged campers, but all local youth are welcome.

This year’s theme for the camp is a Mythical Sea Creature Adventure. Evans invites scouts and those interested in scouting to join them for an exciting week-long journey under the sea, where participants will learn about mythical ocean creatures, unleash their creativity and embark on thrilling challenges, potentially earning badges.

Evans said campers start each morning, and they have six activities for them to do throughout the day. Activities include marksmanship/archery, games, physical education, arts & crafts, and scouting activities, where they work toward a merit badge.

Throughout the week, participants will work on fun and creative activities like leatherworking and the annual Egg Drop competition, and the kids’ favorite waterslide day.

“We have a water slide on Friday. Everybody always looks forward to that,” Evans said. “After closing, we have a water slide, and they can stay as long as the water lasts.”

Evans said one of the arts & crafts projects planned this year is a collage on littering.

“We’re going to do some collages this year out of junk picked up around the lake,” Evans said. “It’s going to be a litter poster. We’re hoping they’ll put it in the library on display.”

The camp will be held June 9 through June 13 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at 81 John Harris Road in LaGrange. The cost of the camp is $110, which includes a t-shirt and badge.

Organizers are asking parents to register by June 26, but Evans said latecomers can still attend; they just might not have a t-shirt for them.
