Jamiya Reed is set to compete at the Division II level in track and field in the fall. The Troup High graduate is heading across the state to Augusta University.
“They have one of the top nursing schools in the state, AND I get a chance to keep competing in track and field, so it was really a win-win situation for me,” Reed said. “Competing at a Division II level does have me a little nervous, but I’m more excited than anything.
“It’s about three hours from home as well, so not too far, but not too close either,” she added, laughing.
Reed, a versatile track and field athlete, was recruited for her leaping ability.
“I will be doing the triple jump, the high jump and the long jump,” she said. “My freshman year (at Troup) I mostly focused on the high jump, and I did hurdles too. My 10th grade year was when I started to do the triple jump and the long jump and I’ve been doing them ever since.”
When Reed set her mind on being a collegiate track and field athlete, first-year track and field coach Mario Walker went to work. Despite not knowing Reed well at the beginning of the season, he worked tirelessly to get her name out there, and it worked.
“Coach Mario actually did a great job of getting my name out there, and once he did that, a lot of schools reached out and got in contact with me,” she said. “I had the same coach for my first three years, so it was a little weird having a change for my senior year, but he came in and helped me out right away.”
Reed qualified for state in her first three seasons with the Tigers, narrowly missing out as a senior in a stacked region/section.
The Augusta University women’s track and field team is coming off a successful 2025 season. The Jaguars finished third in the Peach Belt Conference, and Reed will have a chance to come in right away and help the team chase a conference championship.
It was not always set in stone that Reed would be heading to the next level as a track and field athlete. The former Tiger was a two-sport star during her time at Troup High. In addition to Reed’s exploits on the track, she was a standout volleyball player, helping the Tigers make school history as a junior in 2023 when the team made their first-ever state quarterfinals appearance.
“Making history and going to the Elite 8 with those girls was so special,” Reed said. “I will never forget that.”
Choosing to pass up opportunities to play volleyball in college was difficult, but Reed might not be done with the sport quite yet.
“For a while, I was really focused on playing volleyball in college, but once my senior year came around, I decided I wanted to keep doing track,” Reed said.
“I might try and walk on the volleyball team at Augusta too,” she added, flashing a grin.
