There is a new healing hand at Troup High School. Maggie Denmon officially took over as the Tigers’ head athletic trainer earlier this month. The Carrollton native is back in West Georgia after graduating from the University of Georgia earlier in May of this year.

Denmon, while not a native to Troup County, is familiar with the area. She graduated from Carrollton High School just up the road and is currently a resident of Heard County, also just up the road.

“My fiancé and I have some land up in Heard County, so when this job opened up, I was all over it,” Denmon said. “This was exactly what I was looking for, and it kind of just fell into my lap.”

While this will be Denmon’s first full-time athletic trainer job, she comes to Troup with a wealth of experience. Denmon completed internships as an assistant athletic trainer with the University of Georgia football, women’s soccer and swimming and diving teams. With a wide variety of different athletics offered by Troup High, her varied athletic training experience will serve her well.

There was no easing Denmon into the job. During her first two weeks, Denmon got the Tiger football team ready for a spring game, where she patrolled the sidelines, AND the GHSA AAA State Championship Series that the Tigers ended up winning.

“They threw me in right away,” Denmon said. “We had the Final 4 (for baseball) on my second day.”

Helping student-athletes has been a calling for Denmon as far back as she can remember. Being on the sidelines or in the dugout has always felt like home for her.

“I was a student athletic trainer at Carrollton my junior and senior year, and ever since then I’ve been on this path,” she said. “Straight out of high school, I was thinking, let’s go to college and focus on athletics.”

Denmon is joining the Troup High athletic program at a ripe time. The Tigers are fresh off their first team state championship in over 20 years, with the baseball team winning the first non-wrestling state title in school history.

Troup wrestling is also still a powerhouse, finishing as the AAA state runner-up for the 2024-25 season and having two individuals win state championships.

“I heard a lot of good things about the athletics here, and right away, the baseball season was still ongoing, and we had football gearing up too,” she said. “Everybody has been super nice and welcoming, and they’ve made it easy to adjust.”

After getting thrown into the deep end to start her tenure as a Tiger, Denmon now has a chance to breathe and get adjusted.

“It’ll be a good time to start touching base with all the programs and coaches,” Denmon said.
