West Point native and former Troup County High School and West Point High School coach Charles Flowers was elected into the Georgia Athletics Coaches Association Hall of Fame on May 31, 2025.
Flowers first began his coaching and teaching career at West Point High School in 1983. Flowers was the final head coach of the West Point football team before the school consolidated with Troup. The Red Devils went 2-8 in 1984, his first year in charge of the program, before turning it around the following year with a record of 6-5 and a playoff appearance.
“West Point was a very poor area, and athletics was the only thing that some of those kids had… I knew at that time West Point was the place I was supposed to be,” he told WRBL in 2021. “When the schools consolidated, I had a choice to go to Newnan and be the head baseball coach and assistant football coach or go to Shaw.”
Flowers’ time at Shaw is legendary. He became one of only six coaches in the history of high school sports in the state of Georgia to lead two separate programs to a state championship in the same school year when he took the Raiders’ football team to the championship in 2000 and the baseball team in 2001.
Flowers spent 14 extremely memorable years at Shaw High School. After a three-year stop at Dougherty High School, Flowers spent his final two years as a head coach at Troup High School. He went 16-7 with one playoff win during his two seasons with the Tigers in 2010 and 2011.
“Going back to Troup and having that impact on my own nephew and seeing people I grew up with made me feel appreciated,” Flowers said in 2021. “I still want Troup to be successful.”
During his time as a head football coach in Georgia, Flowers compiled a record of 172-81 with seven region titles and one state title. His baseball record stands at 412-180 with two region titles, two state runner-up finishes and one state championship.
After his time in the high school ranks came to a close, Flowers came full circle, returning to West Point as the associate athletic director at Point University.
After leaving Point University, Flowers has stayed involved in the community in the Chattahoochee Valley through his mentorship program, This Works INC.
