Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP)  is hosting a Summer Community Bed Build Day on Saturday, June 21, at New Ventures.

During the event, volunteers of all skill levels will help craft bunk beds for children in need of a comfy, safe bed to call their own.

SHP is a national non-profit that aims to make sure that “No kid sleeps on the floor in our town.”

Chapter President Greg Watts said SHP needs to build up its bed stock between their spring build in April and the upcoming Bunk Beds Across America event held every September.

“We’ve got a big lag between our last build date that we did, and between our Bunks Across America,” Watts said. “We’re trying to build our summer inventory.”

Watts said they deliver between 30 and 40 beds every month, so there is always a need.

“I get applications every week, even after doing that in this community for six years,” Watts said. “Most of them are for families with multiple children. They’re not just one child.”

During the big Bunks Across America build, they typically make at least 100 beds. For a smaller event like this, Watts said they are hoping to build around 50.

“Even if it’s a small build like this, that’s a month and a half that we can cover. That’s kind of the way we look at it,” Watts said.

Not only does the group provide the beds to kids in need, they provide brand new mattresses, sheets, pillows and comforters, all free of charge. Local churches, businesses and others sponsor the endeavor.

The LaGrange chapter of SHP covers Troup County down to West Point and Pine Mountain and up north into Franklin, Georgia, Watts said. The nonprofit has 17 chapters in Georgia.

“We’re getting new chapters every three or four months. We’re trying to fill in the whole state, that would be the goal,” Watts said.

The local chapter has built a little over 2,000 beds since it began in 2018.

The summer build event will be held on Saturday, June 21, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at New Ventures at 150 Lukken Industrial Drive in LaGrange.
