As most kids and parents are just settling into summer, the Calumet Park Neighborhood Association (CPNA) is already planning how to help with the return to school.
CPNA is set to host its third annual Back-to-School Party and Parent Resource Fair in the park on Aug. 2.
The event aims to provide a fun Saturday, along with much-needed school supplies and other resources for the upcoming school year.
“We’re going to be giving out school supplies, and we are offering free vendor slots for vendors to come out and also help with the school supplies given out at the event,” said organizer Lee Jones.
The event has been a big hit in previous years, Jones said. She currently serves as the Board Chair for the Calumet Park Neighborhood Association.
“We’re just going to be out there trying to entertain the kids and get them what they need for school,” she said.
“There’s a great need in the community to support single mothers or single parents with school supplies,” Jones said. “School supplies are not cheap. They’re expensive, especially if you have more than one child.”
“We’re just trying to close the gap and just help out by supplying free school supplies to the kids,” she said.
The event will also include parent resources, including info from the Department of Public Health and counselors, so parents can talk about their children’s behavioral health. Jones said they are also hoping to have a mini job fair.
For the kids, the splash pad will be open for what will likely be a hot summer day. They’ll have other games from vendors as well.
The event is free to attend, and the school supplies are also free to those who need them, but vendors will be selling food, Jones said.
The Back to School Party and Parent Resource Fair will be held, Saturday, Aug. 2, starting at 10 a.m. at Calumet Park on Union Street in LaGrange.
