LaGrange Piano Teen Drama Club is set for a pair of performances of Disney’s High School Musical Jr.
The local drama club will present the high-energy, family-friendly production bursting with catchy songs, dynamic choreography and all the fun of the hit Disney Channel Original Movie.
The show is performed entirely by local teens and is the junior version of the smash musical. The musical follows the story of Troy Bolton, played on stage by Nash Mosley, and Gabriella Montez, performed by Olivia Henderson and Celina Bakshani.
In the junior version of the stage play, the pair of students defy expectations as they audition for a high school musical, challenging the status quo along the way, and learning more about themselves. The show features hit songs like “Start of Something New,” “Get’cha Head in the Game,” “Stick to the Status Quo,” and more.
The performances originate from the drama club camps hosted by LaGrange Piano.
Noelle Reed, Director of LaGrange Piano, said they began hosting summer drama camps in 2017 and hosted their first summer musical in 2018.
“We had about 20 kids. We did Aristocats, and every summer since then, we have just grown and grown. This summer, we are doing three separate weeks, with three separate casts, and we had about 70 kids coming to our musical theater camps between the three weeks this summer,” Reed said.
Reed explained that the kids learn and perform the musical, including the choreography, all in one week.
“They got their parts Monday morning at 9 a.m. and on Friday, they’re going to be ready to do the show,” Reed said.
The teens who perform the show are from all different schools, so it allows their respective drama club actors to collaborate. And it allows smaller schools that might not have a big drama club or homeschooled kids to participate.
“We have some kids from LaGrange Academy, Troup High School, homeschoolers, Lafayette, Christian and Springwood Academy. They’re coming from Hogansville, Valley and LaGrange,” Reed said.
High School Musical Jr. will be performed Friday, June 13, at 6 p.m. and Saturday, June 14, at 2 p.m. at Franklin Road Baptist Church at 1424 New Franklin Road in LaGrange.
Tickets are $5.00 and available at the door.
