House Bill 296 went into effect on July 1, 2025, paving the way for Georgia drivers with a mobile or digital driver’s license (also known as mDL) to present it during traffic stops or interactions with law enforcement (LE). While the new law allows for the digital license or ID to be presented, not all officers will be able to accept it right away, and the digital license or ID is not a substitute for your physical card at this time.

Here’s what you need to know about the new law:

From July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2027:

4 If the officer has a digital license reader, they may accept your mDL.  If they do not have a reader, you must show your physical license.

 Starting July 1, 2027:

4 All Georgia law enforcement must have digital license readers to accept the digital license or ID.
DDS says Always follow the officer’s instructions. If there’s a disagreement, comply respectfully and seek legal guidance afterward.  DDS recommends that drivers continue to be prepared to show their physical license since most law enforcement agencies will not have the equipment needed to accept the digital license.
