On July 26, LaGrange Councilman Quay Boddie is partnering with 2nd Call to host a community violence intervention and prevention event.
The goal is to raise awareness, foster safer neighborhoods and promote proactive solutions to address violence in the LaGrange and Troup County community.
2nd Call is a community-based organization designed to save lives by reducing violence and assisting in the personal development of high-risk individuals, proven offenders, former felons, parolees and others who society disregards.
The free event will provide free food — hot dogs, burgers, chips and drinks — along with information about local resources, and opportunities for youth and families.
“It’s just a way for us to get out different resources when it comes to mental health. We’re going to try to have some food insecurity programs there and mental health education. We’re just trying to cover all of the bases when it comes to things that could help prevent violence,” Boddie said.
The event comes as schools are about to restart, so families can get helpful resources to address all their needs. It’s some type of need that isn’t being fulfilled that often leads to violence, Boddie said.
“Sometimes violent things happen when there’s a lack of something, whether that be food or it may be education. Whatever the case may be,” Boddie said.
The event will have booths set up to connect community members to vital resources and support services, share violence prevention strategies and empower youth and families through education, engagement and collaboration.
The event also aims to highlight the critical work of community organizations focused on public safety, mental health, education and social support.
“It’s just something for the community as we continue to fight and hopefully slow down some of this violence and senseless acts that we’re dealing with,” Boddie said.
The community violence intervention and prevention event will be held on Saturday, July 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Staples parking lot at 240 New Franklin Road in LaGrange.
