Winter storm warning issued

Winter is coming.

A winter storm warning has been issued for Troup County and the surrounding area beginning at 4 p.m. Friday and ending at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The latest forecast calls for between 2 and three inches of snow to fall.

“Precipitation could begin as soon as late morning Friday,” said Kyle Thiem, a forecaster with the National Weather Service in Peachtree City. The precipitation will start as rain and turn to a mix of rain and snow about 6 p.m. The precipitation will turn to all snow by midnight and end by midmorning Saturday.

Snow, not ice, is the primary threat, Thiem said.

In the meantime, local crews with LaGrange and Troup County were preparing to work on the roads as the storm hits.

“Right now we have our spreader trucks and motor graders ready,” said Ronnie Cantrell, city of LaGrange Public Works director.

Cantrell and James Emery, Troup County engineer, said people shouldn’t be out on the roads Friday night unless absolutely necessary.

“We’re expecting it to get bad,” Emery said. “We’d like for people to stay off the roads.”

Emery said all the county’s resources would be put to treating the roads after the storm, along with crews from the state Department of Transportation.
