Community cooking

The Daily News’ weekly Neighbors series features one person from LaGrange and the surrounding area. This week we sought out some classic southern inspiration from Daniel Holloway. Holloway works at Sejong, but he is best known within the community for selling fried pork skins at local events.

LaGrange Daily News: Where are you from?

Holloway: I’m from here in LaGrange.

LDN: What do you like about living here in LaGrange?

Holloway: It is calm, safe. I feel safe here in LaGrange.

LDN: What do you enjoy about working here?

Holloway: Working as a Kia supplier gives me stability in the community, and then I have time to do my hobby on the side. So, it just keeps me busy and keeps me safe and out of trouble.

LDN: How did you get started with Holloway’s Pork Skins?

Holloway: Well, it all started with my grandmother. I was raised with her on a small farm, and we used to raise and slaughter our own meat. I grew up and moved to LaGrange, and I met a gentleman who was cooking pork skins. He got tired of doing it, and I’m like “I want some,” and he’s like, “I’m not doing it anymore. Do it yourself.” So, there you have it. Trial and error, and 8 years later here I am.

LDN: What do you enjoy doing when you aren’t frying pork skins or working?

Holloway: I love just relaxing. Occasionally I get to go out to West Point Lake and fish and just be me, chill out.

LDN: What would you say is the most beautiful place in Troup County?

Holloway: Sweetland (Amphitheatre at Boyd Park). The amphitheater brings a lot of attraction to LaGrange. It is something that has been much needed here. It gives somewhere for people in our community and surrounding communities somewhere to go, and it’s safe to relax and just let their hair down and have some fun.

LDN: What kind of business would you like to see come to LaGrange?

Holloway: Holloway’s Pork Skins! But, any other business coming to LaGrange that will boost the economy and keep LaGrange moving forward as Metro Atlanta. As a LaGranger myself, LaGrange is everything. The more that I can see LaGrange grow, the more I can see our children and our future here in LaGrange.

LDN: Is there anything else that you would like to add?

Holloway: God has truly blessed the City of LaGrange — the leaders and also the followers. We as the people are truly blessed here in LaGrange, Georgia. We’ve got some of the best officers, officials, fire department — I would say — in the state of Georgia. LaGrange is right at the top.
