More sweltering days are forecast for Troup County after a weekend of record-breaking temperatures.

The mercury soared to 100 Saturday at LaGrange-Callaway Airport, surpassing the previous record for that date, which was 98 degrees set in 1952. Sunday also saw 100 degrees, bettering the old mark of 99, also set in 1952.

Highs in the upper 90s are forecast for today and Tuesday, then easing a bit to the mid-90s through Friday. Lows are expected in the mid-70s. There’s a 60 percent chance of rain Wednesday through Friday.

Normal extremes for this time of year are 86 and 69.

Meanwhile, a heat advisory is in effect until 7 p.m. today for a swath of the middle of the state, including Troup County. Hot temperatures and high humidity could produce a heat index of 103 to 109 and lead to heat illnesses if proper precautions are not taken.

The National Weather Service advises residents to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room and stay out of direct sunshine. The elderly, the very young and people with heart conditions are most at risk in extreme heat, experts say.

They also say to keep pets safe by providing plenty of clean, cool water and a shady location.
