LaGRANGE — High-flying fun cruises in to the LaGrange-Callaway Airport on Saturday with the return of the Southern Wings Fly In and car show.

The event, which attracted more than 3,000 people last year, is free and open to the public. Parking is $5 and the event is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Chad Traylor, airport manager, said the function promises family fun, food and displays of several types of aircraft and entertainment.

“This is a great opportunity to come out and learn what our local airport has to offer,” he said. “We’re going through a period of growth and we’re really trying to get the community involved.”

The fly in gives aviation enthusiasts the chance to get up close and personal with war birds, experimental aircraft, helicopters and classic cars, Traylor said.

Entertainment for children, including inflatable bounce houses, will also be on hand, he added. The Georgia State Patrol is slated to provide a helicopter demonstration as part of the fly in.

Barbecue and refreshments will also be available for purchase 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. A pancake breakfast is scheduled 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.

The event is in its second year and Traylor said he intends to continue to make the event annual.

The weather Saturday in LaGrange is expected to be overcast with a 20 percent chance of stray showers or thunderstorms. The high is forecasted to be 77 degrees. The event is rain or shine.

“With the forecast we’re looking at, it could turn out to be a great day for aviation,” Traylor said.
