WEST POINT — A driver was fortunate to escape with just some cuts to his hand after troopers with the Georgia State Patrol said he possibly fell asleep behind the wheel of his car and smashed into a tree Thursday afternoon.

According to Trooper Brad Turner, the man said he was driving his 1993 Toyota Camry north on West Point Road and was negotiating a curve between Old West Point and Hudson Roads about 2:30 p.m.

Turner said the car apparently drifted across the center lane, went off the shoulder of the road and hit a tree.

The vehicle then spun sideways and became wedged in between two trees.

The driver told the trooper he thinks he fell asleep because he had just finished his shift at a plant in West Point.

According to Turner, the man had some cuts to one of his hands. He was treated at the scene for his injuries.

Turner said the driver was cited for driving too fast for conditions.

Another bizarre accident tied up traffic briefly on Bartley Road early Thursday morning about 8:30 a.m.

The driver of a pickup truck somehow lost control of his vehicle. The truck flipped over and landed perpendicular on top of a ditch on the side of the road. No further information the wreck was available this morning.

Eyewitnesses said emergency crews were able to get the driver out, but information on any injuries was unavailable this morning.
