LAGRANGE – The Callaway, LaGrange and Troup wrestling teams will all be in Carrollton today for the start of the Chattahoochee River Wrestling Association tournament.
The traditional-format tournament, which wraps up on Saturday, will be held at Central-Carroll High.
There will be 14 teams participating in what is the marquee event for the CRWA, which was created eight years ago.
The action gets under way this afternoon, and the wrestlers will return to the mat at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
LaGrange head coach Scooter Weathers said the top wrestlers will get to take redesigned medals home with them.
“We finally got our medals shaped like Georgia done,” Weathers said. “The wrestlers are going to be ecstatic when they see those.”
The local teams are hoping to return home Saturday evening with an impressive haul of medals.
Troup’s wrestling team is having a strong season that continued with an impressive showing at a 39-team tournament at Woodstock High last weekend.
Dakota Wilson had a third-place finish at 126 pounds, and Scott Hicks was fifth at 160 pounds.
LaGrange came through with a championship effort in its own tournament last weekend.
LaGrange went 5-0 to win the Granger Duals, and it beat Northgate in the day’s final match featuring two unbeaten teams.
Callaway’s wrestling team is led by sophomore Justin Kiss, who had a fifth-place finish at last year’s state meet.
Callaway tuned up for the CRWA tournament by competing at Heard County on Wednesday.
